Successful treatment not only ensures the appearance of the eyes will improve, but that their functionality is maintained. Our expertise allows us to achieve this dual purpose, and gives us the ability to provide better outcomes and a higher level of safety than traditional plastic surgeons.
Blepharoplasty is a type of plastic surgery used to improve the function and/or appearance of the eyelids. Over time, the skin of the upper eyelids tends to droop, leading to a tired, older, or angry appearance. In addition to these changes, low-hanging or “droopy” eyelids can limit peripheral vision and in some cases even make central vision blurred. A blepharoplasty works to resolve these issues by raising the eyelids’ position on the eye and creating a younger and healthier appearance.
In an Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty, your surgeon starts by taking precise measurements of the eyelids in multiple positions to ensure that your eyelids will open and close naturally and completely after surgery. Next, small incisions are made in the natural contours and lines of the upper eyelids to expose the extra tissue. Once incisions are made, the excess fatty tissue and skin that causes the drooping is removed and the eyelid is closed with tiny sutures. Because of their placement and size, these incisions are barely visible and fade quickly over time.
Similar to the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids can develop excess skin and fat over time to create a sad or tired appearance. When this occurs, a Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty may be needed to fully resolve the functional and aesthetic issues that have developed. In a procedure very similar to the upper eyelid procedure, excess tissue will be removed from the lower eyelid to create a refreshed and more youthful appearance. In most cases, blepharoplasty is covered by Medicare and most other insurances.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing is a treatment used to reduce wrinkles, blemishes, and sun damage. It does this by using concentrated pulses of laser light on the outermost layer of skin to remove surface irregularities. The treatment improves the skin’s appearance in three ways
- Surface damage caused by sun and aging is reduced. The laser removes epidermal blemishes, age spots, and precancerous lesions.
- The upper skin layers are sculpted smooth and deeper wrinkles are reduced or eliminated. Within four or five days of the procedure, upper layers regrow with new skin that has never been exposed to the sun, wind or other sources of damage.
- The laser stimulates the growth of healthy new collagen and elastic fibers within the skin. These components maintain the skin’s resilience and elasticity, and are lost as we age. For up to six months after the resurfacing procedure, the wrinkles continue to diminish as the skin improves.
At Montgomery Eye Center, we use Botox injections for both cosmetic and medical treatments. The goal of cosmetic Botox injections is the reduction of facial lines and wrinkles. By placing small Botox injections in specific areas, facial muscles are able to relax and allow smoothing of the overlying skin. The effects generally last three to four months, and treatment can be repeated to maintain the effects. In addition to cosmetic treatments, we also use Botox injections to treat a medical condition called Blepharospasm. This abnormal twitching of the eyelids is caused by facial muscle spasms, and is treated by relaxing the non-functioning muscles with Botox. In both forms of Botox treatments, the goal is to improve quality of life and promote a healthy appearance and lifestyle. As we age, we start producing less of the proteins needed to maintain structure and volume in our skin. The result of this is evidenced by wrinkles and lines and can be worsened by sun damage. Restylane is an injectable treatment that works to provide long-lasting fullness and structure to facial features. Treatments can last up to nine months, and maintenance can be done at regular intervals to keep facial contours looking youthful and smooth.
